Paperwork audit revealed some procedural errors which predate my time in the job but now I am being threatened with a written warning: can I appeal this?
I am employed by a commercial vehicle company for 22yrs with a exemplary record. I was made supervisor three years ago two of which I worked alongside the manager. For the last 12 months I have worked on my own as the manager has left and now my area manager oversights my work occasionally. In the last week an outside auditor picked up on some incorrect paperwork procedures which seem to date back to the time of the previous manager and which I continued thinking them to be correct. A previous audit back in December 2006 did not pick up the problem, so I carried on in the belief I was doing everything correctly. I have now been told that I am to get a written warning. Can I appeal against this?
If your employer is minded to discipline you, it should follow the correct disciplinary procedure. This will require a meeting in which you should be accompanied by a work colleague or trade union representative. At the meeting you should be given the opportunity to put your case (as you do appear to have a full explanation). If you are still disciplined after that meeting you are entitled to appeal to another manager (dependent upon the exact wording of your employer's disciplinary procedure).
If after the disciplinary procedure has been followed you are still unhappy with the outcome there is nothing further that you can do, unless you resign and sue your employer for constructive unfair dismissal.
