My employer wants to reduce my five day working week to four days as the business is not doing well - are they allowed to do this? There is no specific reference to this in the contract, only "normal hours of work are subject to alteration by the company from time to time and any such alteration will be notified to you".
Even if your employment contract does contain that wording, if you have been working full time since joining you could argue that by 'custom and practice' you work a five day week not irregular hours.
Therefore if you wish to object to the reduction in hours and pay you should do so through your employers' grievance procedure.
An imposed reduction in pay is potentially breach of contract allowing you to claim constructive dismissal and redundancy.
