Interview expenses promised but firm refuses to pay: what action can I take?

If I travel over 100 miles for an interview and pay parking charges and bridge tolls, what can I do if the firm refuses to reimburse me after promising to cover all travel expenses?

If such a promise was made then a letter before action should be written to the firm requesting payment, allow 14 days to pay and if no such payment is forthcoming then it would be necessary to issue proceedings in the small claims court.
