I have been off sick with a back injury but my employers want me to go in to discuss a possible return to work. What should I do?

I have been off work sick for four months with a back injury. I am waiting to see a consultant but my doctor put on my sick note that he would support a return to work if hours/posture etc could be looked at. My company have now rung me and want me to go in and discuss this with them to see if we can work something out. The problem is that my back is most painful when sitting and as I work in an office most of my day involves sitting down. What should I do?

You need to have an open discussion with your employers. You are suffering from a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act. This places a duty on the employer to consider all options. Explain that with a raised desk and a specialist chair you would be able to work - do some investigation beforehand and ask advice from an osteopath. There are lots of solutions available. If you go to the meeting and agree that you cannot sit down for long periods your employer may be able to fairly dismiss you. However, if you go with sensible suggestions they will have to consider them.
